Facts about Studying MBBS in Russia-STUDY MEDICINE IN RUSSIA

This is Amit Kumar, I am an aspirant looking forward to study medicine abroad. I understand that many of you have been trying for AIPMT and want to get medical seat in any part of Russia, But guys do you think its really easy??


Lets face some facts about Studying medicine in India



  •         There are only 41,569 seats for MBBS in India but every year around 10 lakhs students appear in various all india and state PMTs.
  •          Only 335 Medical Colleges are there in India, out of them 181 are Private and 154 are Government colleges
  •          India marked 67th among the developing countries, but in the case of doctor-population ratio. 1:2000 approx
  •          There is a shortage of 10 Lakh doctors in India. There are 7 Lakh doctors against a requirement of 17 Lakhs.
  •        In India total 10 Lakh students appear in various entrance examinations out of that 15% clears the examination

    Now after having a look at these data you must be making up your mind to change your line as it is so difficult to get seat in India.


Russian medical courses are getting their deserved acclaim across the global education industry. As more and more students from across the world are targeting Russian Universities for courses like MBBS, BDs and MDS.

Here are some questions which you can go through and learn about Medical course in Russia. Hope you feel good:-


Q) What are the requisites for Practising/studying medicine in Russia? Are medical degrees from Russian Universities recognised by any Russian or Indian bodies?
A) As per the amendment to the Indian Medical Act, 1956, any Indian student intending to study medicine in any medical college anywhere in abroad for a graduate medical course has to obtain an eligibility certificate from the Medical Council of India, New Delhi before joining the medical college abroad. After the successful completion of the course, the student is expected to appear or a screening test conducted by the National Board of Examination as required by the Medical Council of India prior to the registration with the Medical Council of India. The academic requirement for the eligibility certificate as defined by the Medical Council of India for the general is an aggregate 50% marks in the Physics / Chemistry and Biology and 40% in case of the reserved category. Since you would likely be doing your specialisation from a Russian University, which is listed by the WHO in its "Directory of world medical schools", you would be eligible to appear for screening examinations to many screening examinations like PLAB etc.

Q) Does the student have to give any entrance examination for joining the university in Russia?
A) There is NO entrance examination for Students targeting Russian Universities. The admissions are based on the 12th standard marks for the Graduate courses and as per the equivalency of the Indian graduate degree with the Russian degrees for the post graduate courses. All admissions are strictly on a first come first served basis.

Q) Are there any scholarships or grants available for foreign/Indian students?
A) Russian education is highly subsidised by the Government of the Russian Federation. Therefore there are no separate scholarships or grants available from individual universities. However, bank loans are now available from all nationalised, co-operative and the private sector banks. These loans are available at very low interest and are generally repaid in easy instalments one year after the completion of the educational period.
Dont look for scholarships, they are very limited, the tuition fee is already so low that you dont need any scholarship.


Q) What is the cost of living for an International student in Russia?
A) Usually, an International student may stay quite comfortably in US$ 80 - US$ 100 for a month. This figure is approximate and would vary according to city, person and living standards.

Q) Can an International student open a personal bank account at Russia?
A) Yes, a student can open a bank account in his/her name. This is in fact recommended.

Q) Can I avail a medical treatment while studying in any Russian University?
A) Yes. The medical treatment in the university covers the medical insurance for the students.

Q) What documents do I need to carry with me while going to Russia?
A) Please ensure that you carry the following documents with you:
  • Passport (original)
  • Air Ticket
  • Copy of the visa invitation
  • Copy of the visa
  • Foreign exchange for the fees / living expenses
  • Mark sheet as well as certificate of 10th , 12th std.
  • Degree mark sheet and transcript for PG students
  • Internship completion certificate (for PG students only)
  • Admission letter from the University
  • 20 coloured photographs of 3.5 X 3.5 cm size
  • HIV free medical certificate
Also take along all personal items you deem necessary for travelling and staying in Russia including winter wear.

Q) What is the type of accommodation at Russian Universities?
A) Universities usually provide enough rooms and facilities for all international students in their hostels. All hostels are supplied with cold and hot water and central heating system, each room contains beds, a desk, chairs, storage space and telephone facility.

*Hostels in Russia are simple and comfortable, however Tver State Medical Academy's hostels are considered the best as one of their hostel is flat type and is attached with bathroom and kitchen which adds to the comfort and privacy.

Q) When are the usual vacations in Russian universities?

A) There are two types of vacations in Russian medical universities. The Winter vacations are from 20th January to 5th February and Summer vacations are from 1st July to 31st August. During vacations, students can either travel to their home countries or even look forward to seasonal employment/business in Russia. 

*Yes you can travel back to India, Dont forget to get the Famous Russian Choclates for your friends and families, this could be great delicacies for them

Q) Are there any mess facilities in University Hostels? What type of food is usually available?
A) Cafeterias and mess facilities are available in almost every Russian Universities. Indian, Chinese, Arabian, Italian and Malaysian mess are also available. All types of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes are provided, especially to International students. There is also a rich variety of milk products and fruits available.

*Friends, don't expect the oily sabji and fried pakodas and spicy food as Russians are boiled foodeaterian and prefer low salt and spices which may prove to be a total disaster to your tongue until you get used to of it.
